TOWN OF TAOS NEW YEAR'S EVE CELEBRATION CANCELLED DUE TO WINTER STORM THE FACILITIES AND EVENTS DEPARTMENT with the Town of Taos is announcing that the New Year's Eve event scheduled on the Taos Plaza is being canceled due to public safety concerns over the impending winter weather advisories by the National Weather Service. Severe weather is indicated for Friday beginning early in the day and continuing through Saturday morning. It is with much regret that this decision has been arrived at and we are well aware that weather predictions can go in many directions. That said, we feel it is imperative that we evaluate and assess all factors to assure that the highest level of safety of the residents of the Town of Taos and after consulting with federal weather agencies and local public safety personnel we believe that this is the most reasonable action. The challenges of putting on the event under the threat of high winds, icy condi- tions, significant wind chills, and potentially significant snowfall would make it impossible to put on the event or to do so safely. If we experience anywhere near the same conditions as our last storm or those being predicted, Town personnel normally involved in building and supporting the New Year's Eve event will be needed in a public safety capacity for snow removal and deicing of roads, parking lots, and sidewalks, removal of downed trees, responding to accidents, possible localized power, and heating issues and other public safety concerns. Gathering together to bring in the New Year has become a wonderful new and fun tradition that we enjoy providing in which we have annually all been able to come together in a safe, family friendly event in the historic heart of our community, with brilliant fireworks display by our firefighters, entertainment by locally popular musicians, holiday lighting by the Town Facilities and Special Events Department anda warm free dinner provided by Town of Taos Mayor Barrone and his family. This has, therefore, not been an easy decision, but we believe it serves the public's best interest in canceling now before the advent of potentially severe weather rather than take a chance on the potential of putting people in harm's way and allowing our personnel to better serve you by instead preparing for the storm. We look forward to continuing the tradition next year, bringing you many exciting concerts and special events we have lined up in the coming year, including the 4th of July celebration, and sharing many new and old traditions to come. TAOS In the interim, please stay safe and warm and the Town of Taos and the staff of the Facilities and Special Events Department wishes all of you, your family, and friends a healthy and joyous New Year!
