Casa Benavides BETSPORAKENT INN T he McCarthy family established a local mercantile business in 1904; the Benavides family arrived in Taos during the 1600's. Tom McCarthy's and Barbara Benavides' families lived within a block of each other. Over time, their friendship blossomed from childhood sweethearts into a lifetime of love and marriage. After graduating from college, Tom & Barbara remained in Taos and raised their own family of three children. They launched careers as educators with Barbara teaching physical education and Tom coaching basketball leading his team to three state championships. Eventually they bought the McCarthy family business, The El Mercado, opened The Old Mexico Shop and The Village Weavers Shop and eventually launched their own lodging business. In 1989, Tom and Barbara acquired the Lewis Art Gallery Building on Kit Carson Road, originally built by Barbara's father, Carlos Benavides. The Gal- lery, along with three other adjacent homes built by Carlos, and the original McCarthy family home, were converted into the living quarters and mul- tiple guest rooms, and were officially named the Casa Benavides Inn. Thirty-four years later, the Casa Benavides Inn is the premier hospitality lodging in Taos and Northern New Mexico. Barbara McCarthy passed in June of 2016. Today, Tom and his daughter, Ruthann, and a dedicated staff continue the family legacy of the Casa Benavides Inn. - Barbara & Tom McCarthy, The Casa Benavides Inn "A History of Elegance" CASA BENAVIDES INN Family Owned for 34 Years + CASA BENWIDES INN 137 Kit Carson Road.
