About

to chasing high quality textiles all over the world. Today, it is an impressive collection of wearable art and clothing made primarily by artisans from Peru, Bolivia, and Ecuador. Owner, Andrea Heckman, selects each piece personally as she returns annually to meet with her artisans and suppliers. Jewelry, clothes and textiles from Bali, India, Ireland, Mexico, Turkey and the United States complement the luscious Peruvian sweaters and coats made from the finest, softest alpaca. Italian-made Tecnica apres ski boots are not only beautiful, good for your feet and as comfortable as slippers; they keep you from falling on ice and snow, which we are so fond of in our home location in Taos Ski Valley. Our wearable art collection is enhanced by stylish Beppa Melton wool coats and vests from the Northwest; and the exotic shibori dyed silk-on-wool vests of Joyce Fogel. Beyond wearable art, we have textiles hand woven from naturally dyed handspun yarns in Ayachucho, Peru. This is where the love of textiles adds brilliance to the store: Indonesian ikats, Peruvian arpilleras, Bolivian awayos, Thai hill tribe bags, Egyptian beaded scarves and an endless list. Andrea Heckman has a doctorate in Latin American Studies in Anthropology and Art History. She has guest curated a major exhibit for the Maxwell Museum of Anthropology called ÒCultural Communication through Andean Textiles and RitualsÓ and is the author of Woven Stories: Andean Textiles and Rituals, UNM Press (2003). She has also worked for many years as a trekking and cultural guide in the Andes for the well-known international adventure travel company, Wilderness Travel of Berkeley, California, 1-800-368-2794.
